MECHANISM OF ACTION:
It is a competitive inhibitor of alcohol dehydrogenase which catalyses the conversion of ethanol to acetaldehyde .It catalyses the initial steps in the metabolism
of ethylene glycol and methanol to toxic metabolites.
THERAPEUTIC USES:
It is indicated as an antidote for ethylene glycol or methanol poisoning ,or for use in suspected ethylene glycol or methlanol ingestion ,either alone or
in combination with haemolysis.
SIDE EFFECTS:
vomitting, headache, epigastric pain , disorientation , bradycardia ,hypotension.
DRUG DRUG INTERACTION:
Concurrent interaction with alcohol is contraindicated because fomepizole is known to prolong the half life of ethanol.
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIONS:
1. BLOOD :
Regular intake of moderate to small amounts of alcohol has been found to raise HDL-cholestrol levels .
2. BODY TEMPERATURE
Alcohol is reputed to to combat cold .
3. RESPIRATION
Brandy and whiskey are reputed as respiratory stimulants in collapse . They irritate the buccal and pharyngeal mucosa hich may transiently stimulate respiration.
4.LIVER
Neither brief alcohol intoxication nor chronic intake of small to moderate amounts cause significant liver damage ,provided adequate nutrition is provided.
