MIGLITOL
INTRODUCTION
It is an oral anti-diabetic drug that acts by inhibiting the ability of the patient to break down complex carbohydrates into glucose.
PHARMACOKINETIC
Elimination Half life = 2 hours
Volume of distribution = 0.18 l/kg
Protein Binding = negligible ( less than 4%)
USE
? It is primarily used in diabetes mellitus type 2 for establishing greater glycemic control by preventing digestion of carbohydrates into monosaccharides which can be absorbed by the body.
? It lowers the degree of postprandial hyperglycemia.
SIDE EFFECTS
? Bloating , Diarrhoea, Gas, Soft tools, Stomach pain.
? Severe allergic reactions, bloody stools, severe or persistant constipation, nausea, severe stomach pain.
DRUG DRUG INTERACTIONS
? MIglitol+Acetyl salicylic acid = Hypoglycemic activity of Miglitol increases
? Miglitol+Dihydrotestosterone = Hypoglyemic activity of Miglitol increases
? Miglitol+Insulin human = Miglitol may increase hypoglycemic activity of Insulin regular
? Miglitol+Insulin lispro = Hypoglycemic activity of Lispro increases
? Miglitol+Phenelzine = Hypoglycemic activity of Meglitol increases
