SPECTINOMYCIN - ANTIBIOTIC DRUG , USES AND SIDE EFFECTS



Introduction
An antibiotic produced by Streptomyces spectabilis. It is active against gram-negative bacteria and used for the treatment of gonorrhea.

 THERAPEUTIC USES
Given by intramuscular injection to treat gonorrhea, in patient allergic to penicillins.

SIDE EFFECT
  • Itching
  • Chills
  • Stomach ache
  • Red rashes


MECHANISM OF ACTION
It is an inhibitor of protein synthesis in the bacterial cell; the site of action is the 30s ribosomal subunit. It is bactericidal in its action.

DRUG-DRUG INTERACTION
Spectinomycin+Avibactam= It may increase the Nephrotoxic activities of
                                                    Spectinomycin.
Spectinomycin+Alendronate= It may increase the activities  of alendronate.
Spectinomycin+Bumetanide= The risk or severity of adverse effects can be                                  Increased when bumetanide is combined with Spectinomycin.
Spectinomycin+Carboplatin=It may increase the Ototoxic activity  of carboplatin
