Lorazepam-general anaesthetic drug

Lorazepam

Mechanism of action 
It binds to an allostaeric site on GABA –A receptor which inhibits GABA and further opens chloride channel in receptor  causing hyper-polarization of the neuron.

Therapeutic uses
In treatment of anxiety , seizures
Sedation 
Agitation

Side effect
Low blood pressure
Confusion 
Ataxia
Sedation , dizziness, weakness

Pharmacological action
It is a benzodiazepine medication.used in treatment of anxiety,trouble sleeping,status epileptics ,alcohol withdrawal. It can be given orally or as an injection into muscle or vein.

Drug drug interactions
Lorazepam+alprazolam = risk of severe adverse effects increases
Lorazepam+valproate =  valproate decreases metabolism of lorazepam
Lorazepam+carbamazipine = increase rate of metabolism
Lorazepam+phenytoin = increase rate of metabolism
Lorazepam+ rifampin= increase rate of metabolism
