Fluvoxamine- Antidepressant and Antianxiety drug and Its Therapeutic Uses.

PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
It is an anti depressant agent belonging to SSRI. A functional decrease in activity of amines , such as serotonin and norepinephrine ,would result in depression ,
a functional increase in the activity would result in  mood elevation.

MECHANISM OF ACTION :
Appears to be linked to its inhibition of CNS neuronal uptake of serotonin.It blocks the reuptake of serotonin at the serotonin reuptake receptor pump of
 the neuronal membrane, enhancing action of serotonin on 5HT1A autoreceptor.


SIDE EFFECTS:
Anorexia, constipation, dyspepsia, dry mouth, headache, nausea, sleep problems, liver toxicity, mania.

THERAPEUTIC USES:
For the management of depression and obsessive compulsive disorder .Also used in management of bulimia.

DRUG DRUG INTERACTION:
  1. Fluoxamine +abciximab = increase the anticoagulant activities of abciximab.
  2. Fluoxamine + alteplase = increase the anticoagulant activities of alteplase.
  3. Fluoxamine +amoxapine = risk of adverse effects increase.
