Flurbiprofen- Non Steroidal anti inflammatory drug and antipyretic drug and its therapeutic uses

PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION :

 It is an NSAID of propionic acid class .It exhibits anti-inflammatory , analgesic , anti –pyretic properties .

MECHANISM OF ACTION : 

Similar to NSAIDS , the anti inflammatory effect occurs via reversible inhibition of cyclo oxygenase , the enzyme responsible for the conversion of arachidonic acid to
 prostaglandin to PGG2 and PGH2  in prostaglandin synthesis pathway. This decreases the prostaglandins involved in pain ,fever, swelling ,inflammation.

THERAPEUTIC USES:

Indicated for the acute or long term treatment of rheumatoid arthiritis ,osteoarthiritis ,and anklosing spondylitis.
It may be used to treat pain associated with dysmenhorrea and mild to moderate pain accompanied by inflammation.

SIDE EFFECTS :
  • It may increase blood pressure and cause fluid retention or edema .
  • GI side effects include bleeding ,ulceration ,perforation.
  • Abdominal pain , constipation ,diarrhea ,dyspepsia ,flatulence .


DRUG DRUG INTERACTION:
1. Flurbiprofen+ diuretics = decreased diuresis.
2. Flurbiprofen + ß blocker = decreased anti hypertensive effect.
3. Flurbiprofen + ace inhibitors  = decreased anti hypertensive effect.
