Fluoxetine:- Antidepressant and Antianxiety drug and its drug -drug interaction

                                                           
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION:
It is an anti depressant agent belonging to SSRI. A functional decrease in activity of amines , such as serotonin and norepinephrine ,would result in depression ,
a functional increase in the activity would mood elevation.

MECHANISM OF ACTION:
It is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor . It inhibits the reuptake of serotonin at the serotonin reuptake pump of neuronal membrane ,enhancing the action of serotonin 
on 5HT 1A autoreceptors.

SIDE EFFECTS :
  • Agitation, hypomania , and other signs of CNS  excitation.
  • Anxiety ,nervousness ,insomnia 
  • Anorexia , nausea diarrhea vasodilation dry mouth.

THERAPEUTIC USES:
In major depressive disorder ,moderate to severe bulimia ,obsessive compulsive disorder ,panic disorder.

DRUG DRUG INTERACTION

1. Fluoxetine + Abciximab = Increase the anticoagulant activities of Abciximab
2. Fluoxetine + Alteplase = Increase the anticoagulant activities of Alteplase
3. Fluoxetine + Amoxapine = Risk of adverse effects increases
