Flunarizine :- Calcium channel blocker and its side effects


MECHANISM OF ACTION:
It is a non selective calcium antagonist with moderate other actions like anti-histaminic, dopamine and serotonin receptor blocker
It antagonises the calmodilin, calcium binding protein and blocks the calcium channels.

THERAPEUTIC USES;
  • Effective in prophylaxis of migraine
  • Occlusive in peripheral vascular disease
  • Vertigo of central and peripheral regions
  • Adjuvant therapy in epilepsy

SIDE EFFECTS:
  • Drowsiness
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Extra pyramidal effects
  • DRUG DRUG INTERACTIONS:
  • Flunarizine+ anti hypertensive =effect of anti hypertensive can be increased
  • Flunarizine+alcohol=effect of alcohol increases

CONTRAINDICATIONS
  1. Contraindicated in the patient with depression
  2. Contraindicated in the patient who have Parkinson disease
  3. Contraindicated in patient with acute phase of stroke.
