Fludrocortisone-Corticosteroids Drug and its pharmacology

MECHANISM OF ACTION

It binds with the mineralo corticoid receptor which causes increase in ions and water transport and thus raises extracellular fluid volume, blood pressure and lowers potassium leve .

THERAPEUTIC USES 
  • Used in treatment of cerebral salt wasting syndrome
  • Used primarily to replace the missing hormone aldosterone in adrenal insufficiency 
  • It is a conformation test for diagnosing conn’s syndrome 

SIDE EFFECTS
  • Sodium and water retention
  •  Edema
  • Hypertension
  • Increased hair growth 
  • hypokalemia
  •  insomenia

DRUG DRUG INTERACTION

1) Fludrocortisone+ amino salicylic acid=risk of it’s adverse effects increases
