MECHANISM OF ACTION
It acts directly on fungal organisms by competitive inhibition of purine and pyrimidine uptake and indirectly by intracellular metabolism to 5fluorouracil.
THERAPEUTIC USES
- Used for treatment of serious infection caused from strains of candida or Cryptococcus neoformans
- Also used for treatment of chromomycosis.
SIDE EFFECTS
- Anemia
- Leukopenia
- Agranulocytosis
- Dudonal ulcer
- Bone marrow toxicity
CONTRAINDICATION
- Concomitant treatment with brivudine is an absolute contraindication.
DRUG DRUG INTERACTION
1) Flucytosine+clozapine=risk of flucytosine adverse effect isincreased
2) Fucytosin+amphotericin B= risk of flucytosin adverse effect is increased
