IDOXURIDINE
Idoxuridine is an anti-herpesvirus antiviral drug.
PHARMACOKINETICS
1. Systemic absorption is unlikely following ocular administration even when nasolacrimal secretions are swallowed, since vidarabine is rapidly deaminated in the gastrointestinal tract.
2. Metabolism - Idoxuridine is rapidly inactivated by deaminases or nucleotidases.
THERAPEUTIC USES
Idoxuridine ophthalmic is used to treat eye infections caused by the herpes virus.
SIDE EFFECTS
• Eye irritation or pain
• Redness
• Itching
• Swelling of the eye
• Increased sensitivity to light and glare
DRUG- DRUG INTERACTIONS
1. Idoxuridine + Boric acid = Results in precipitate formation.
2. Idoxuridine + Corticosteroids = accelerate spread of viral infection.
