Hydroxocobalamin

DESCRIPTION
Hydroxocobalamin is a natural form, or vitamer, of vitamin B12.


PHARMACOKINETICS
1. Excretion is through Urine (50% to 60% within initial 72 hours).
2. Half life is 26-31 hours.
3. Protein binding- Significant; forms various cobalamin-(III) complexes.


THERAPEUTIC USES
Used to treat low levels (deficiency) of  vitamin B12.


SIDE EFFECTS
1. Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the          mouth, face, lips, or tongue)
2. Changes in blood pressure
3. Diarrhea
4. Fainting
5. Flushing
6. Pain or redness at the injection site


DRUG-DRUG INTERACTIONS
1. Hydroxocobalamin + Chloramphenicol = The therapeutic efficacy of Hydroxocobalamin can be          decreased.
2. Hydroxocobalamin + Arsenic trioxide = risk may be increased during treatment with                            hydroxocobalamin for severe anemia.
3. Hydroxocobalamin + Sodium iodide I-131= Hydroxocobalamin may affect the diagnostic                    results of sodium iodide I-131
4. Hydroxocobalamin + sodium iodide I-123 = Hydroxocobalamin may affect the diagnostic                    results of sodium iodide I-131
