Hemichloinium - cholinergic drug and its therapeutic drug

DESCRIPTION:
Hemichloinium also known as hemicholine, is a drug which block the reuptake of choline by high affinity choline transporter at the presynapse.

MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Acetylcholine is synthesized from choline and a donated acetyl group from acetyl co-A ,by the action of choline transferase.
Hemicholinium (HC3) blocks choline uptake (rate limiting step in Ach synthesis) and depletes Ach.

PHARMACOLOGY:
Drug that  inhibit the transport of neurotransmitters into axon terminal or into storage vesicles within terminal s. For many transmitters , uptake determines the time course of transmitter action so inhibiting uptake prolongs the activity of the transmitter.Blocking uptake may deplete  available transmitter stores. Many clinically important drugs are uptake inhibitors although the indirect reaction of the brain rather than the acute block of uptake itself is often responsible for the therapeutics effects.

THERAPEUTIC USES:
Hemicholinium is commonly used as a research tool in animal and in vitro experiments.

DRUG-DRUG INTERACTION:
Atropine + Hemicholinium (HC3) = Inhibit the action of atropine.
