MODAFINIL - CNS Stimulant

MECHANISM OF ACTION

The exact mechanism of action is unclear, although in vitro studies have shown it to inhibit the reuptake of Dopamine by binding to the dopamine reuptake pump, and lead to the increase in extracellular dopamine. Modafinil activates glutamatergic circuits while inhibiting GABA. Modafinil has partial alpha 1b-adrenegic agonist effects by directly stimulating the receptors.

DRUG DRUG INTERACTION

• ATOMOXETINE : it may increase the hypertensive activity of modafinil.

• AXITINIB: The serum concentration of axitinib may increase when given with modafinil.

• AMPHETAMINE: the risk or severity may increase when given with combo of modafinil.

• ACEBUTOLOL: the risk or severity may increase when given in combo of modafinil.

• APREPITANT: the serum concentration of modafinil can be increased when given with combo of modafinil.

SIDE EFFECTS

• Headache

• Nausea

• Nervousness

• Chills and fever

• Tarry stools

• Dizziness, fainting

• Sore  throat

• Back pain

• flushing

• Anti-hypertensive

• CNS stimulants

• Appetite depressants

• Cytochrome P-450 CYP1A2 inhibitors

• Pshycoanaleptics

• Neuroprotective agents
