MECHANISM OF ACTION-
1. Estrogens diffuse into the target
cells and binds with a protein receptor, known as estrogen receptor, which are
present in the female reproductive tract, the mammary gland, the hypothalamus,
and the pituitary.
2. The binding of estrogen to the receptors leads to
the formation of estrogen receptor complex, which results in the increase of hepatic
synthesis of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), thyroid-binding globulin
(TBG), and other serum proteins and also suppress follicle-stimulating hormone
(FSH) from the anterior pituitary.
3. Estrogen along with progestin
suppresses the hypothalamic-pituitary system, hence decreasing the secretion of
gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH).
